Seven contenders for the Mets’ next manager following the dismissal of Carlos Mendoza

Seven contenders for the Mets' next manager following the dismissal of Carlos Mendoza

Change is afoot in Flushing.

On Friday, the Mets decided to part ways with manager Carlos Mendoza after two and a half seasons at the helm.

Even with a hefty roster valued over $320 million, Mendoza led the Mets to the bottom of the National League East, finishing with a dismal record of 34 wins and 47 losses.

In the meantime, Andy Green has been named the interim manager.

As reported by The Post’s Joel Sherman, Jon Heyman, and Mike Puma, several potential candidates are being considered to take over the role permanently.

Alex Cora

Cora might be hunting for another opportunity after his dismissal from the Red Sox in April. He previously led Boston to a World Series title in 2018 but was let go following a sluggish start to the season, with the team at 10-17.

Andy Green

Green, 48, was in the running for the managerial position back in 2023 before Mendoza’s hiring. He previously served as senior vice president of baseball development for the Mets’ minor leagues. His record managing the Padres from 2016 to 2019 was 274-366, with no playoff appearances. Now he has a chance to redeem himself in the second half of the season.

Carlos Beltran

Beltran, a National Baseball Hall of Famer, had no prior experience as a manager when he was brought on by the Mets in 2019. However, amid the unfolding Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, he and the team decided to go their separate ways before he could manage any games. Currently, he works as a special assistant in the Mets’ front office.

George Lombard

Lombard has climbed the coaching ladder since 2010 and was recently the bench coach for the Tigers under AJ Hinch. He has also served as the Dodgers’ first base coach and has been part of three World Series.

Walker McKinben

With a solid relationship with Stearns dating back to their time together with the Brewers, McKinben has worked his way up through the White Sox system to become a bench coach.

Rob Thomson

Thomson is another recent managerial casualty, previously with the Phillies. He was dismissed in April after starting the season with a 9-19 record, despite having the best winning percentage of any Phillies manager since 1900. With over 40 years in baseball, he has progressed through the Yankees system, starting as a third base coach for their Class A affiliate in 1990 and moving up to bench coach in 2015.

Dick Scott

The Mets might consider Dick Scott, currently managing the Triple-A Syracuse Mets. He has held various roles within the franchise, including field instruction coordinator, bench coach, and director of player development.
