Mike Francesa's 'witness protection' remark regarding Steve Cohen after the Mets let go of Carlos Mendoza

Mets’ Disgraceful Season Leads to Mendoza’s Dismissal

The New York Mets have become an embarrassment, and following that realization, Carlos Mendoza was let go on Friday. Yet, Mike Francesa is vocal about wanting to hear from the team’s owner.

“The lack of accountability surrounding this situation is ridiculous,” Francesa stated on his podcast recently. He brushed past Mendoza’s exit as if it were inconsequential, emphasizing that it’s really the owner in question here. “The owner made grand promises years ago, but now he seems to have disappeared. It’s not acceptable. He needs to step up, face the music, and address the media about the team’s direction.”

In the meantime, the Mets are bringing Andy Green on board as interim manager, hoping to find a way out of a truly disastrous season. Currently, their record stands at 34-47, and there’s been radio silence from owner Steve Cohen during this troubling time.

In a standard statement regarding Mendoza’s firing, Cohen said, “I want to thank Carlos for his integrity and dedication. Our aim to build a championship-level team hasn’t changed, and our fans deserve better results this season.”

Francesa remarked on Cohen’s earlier bold assertions when he took over, especially compared to the previous owners known for their frugality. “He promised change, and it was very clear fans were tired of the previous regime’s approach,” he noted.

Reflecting on Cohen’s ambitions, Francesa added, “He stated he didn’t buy this team to settle for mediocrity. But, honestly, it feels like mediocrity would be a massive improvement at this point.” He then questioned when accountability would become a reality for the team.

Francesa didn’t hold back in criticizing the Mets’ current state, labeling the director of baseball operations as a “total lightweight.” He expressed his frustration by saying, “This team is done—I mean, they could have called it a month ago. Each night, it’s like they’re sending players to the mound just hoping for a decent outcome.”

He concluded with a pointed remark: “Your franchise is at an all-time low.” Clearly, Mendoza’s dismissal has not quelled Francesa’s frustrations. The call for accountability and change remains loud.
