Mason Howell’s Big Moment at the US Open

For 17-year-old Mason Howell, qualifying for the 2025 US Open is, without a doubt, “one of the biggest moments” in his young life.

The high school junior earned his spot in the prestigious tournament by shooting an impressive 18-under par at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, a day that many golf enthusiasts refer to as the “longest day of golf.”

“It was a roller coaster all day,” said Howell, reflecting on his performance after carding a remarkable 63 across two rounds. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous, but walking off the 18th green with my mom and dad, I think it hit me. This really is one of the biggest moments I’ve ever experienced.”

Ranked 8th among boys in the American Junior Golf Association, Howell is set to join Jackson Buchanan in making his major championship debut at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania next week. He’s on track to graduate from Brookwood High School in 2026 and plans to attend the University of Georgia.

Monday was a memorable day for Howell, but it was a tough afternoon for Max Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner, who faced disappointment. Cameron Young clinched the final qualifying spot at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio, after sinking a birdie on the first playoff hole.

Last year’s champion, Bryson Dedanbaugh, will be defending his title after edging out Rory McIlroy, who then claimed victory at Augusta National in April, marking his first Master’s win and completing a golf grand slam.

The 2025 US Open is set to kick off on June 12th.
