Shooting at Rhode Island Ice Rink Claims Two Lives
A shooting incident at an ice rink in Rhode Island on Monday resulted in two fatalities, including the shooter, and left four others injured. This event apparently stemmed from a domestic violence dispute, authorities conveyed.
The gunfire erupted at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket during a hockey match involving Coventry and Blackstone Valley schools. The situation escalated into what officials described as a murder-suicide involving the gunman.
Reportedly, the man killed his wife and shot their two children before turning the gun on himself. One other child was also shot and is currently in the hospital.
Employees at a nearby Walgreens mentioned that panic ensued as people rushed into the pharmacy, alerting staff to the shots fired.
Coventry Public Schools Superintendent Don Cowart issued a statement, confirming that all students from the Coventry boys hockey team who were at the arena were safe. He noted that district officials acted swiftly, coordinating responses with both event staff and law enforcement.
The FBI also responded to the situation, ensuring local authorities have the support they might need. Though they indicated there was no immediate threat to public safety, the agency advised the community to stay clear of the area.
Governor Dan McKee stated his office was closely monitoring the situation. On social media, he mentioned contacting local leaders to extend his support to those impacted.
In a statement from the Providence Bruins, an AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Boston Bruins, the team expressed condolences for those affected and praised the swift actions of first responders.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains shaken by this tragic event.
