Severe Winter Weather Affects Juneau, Alaska
Recently, extreme winter weather has caused significant disruptions in Juneau, Alaska, resulting in a large ship sinking at the port. Residents are also bracing for potential avalanches.
The Piers and Port Authority for the City and Borough of Juneau has indicated that the severe weather is having a considerable effect on operations.
Reports confirm that three large ships sank overnight, increasing the total number of vessels lost to eight due to the storm.
In a statement, Juneau Harbors noted, “Our crews are working around the clock with every dewatering pump available. Unfortunately, as conditions persist, our resources are diminishing quickly.”
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is actively engaged in avalanche hazard mitigation efforts on Thane Road. This area faces a heightened risk of avalanches, prompting officials to close the road until the necessary work is completed and conditions improve.
Officials emphasized that the closure will continue, with avalanche gates in place, until they can ensure safety. They also mentioned that if avalanche debris does reach the road, longer closures may be required.
If you own a boat, please refrain from shoveling snow on your float or finger float, as snow removal from these structures is the responsibility of the ship owner.
The U.S. Coast Guard’s Arctic District has raised concerns about the dangers of heavy snow, which can swiftly affect vessel stability, leading to sinking and potential environmental issues.
This December, Alaska has seen an unusually high amount of snowfall, significantly increasing the risks associated with severe winter weather.
On average, Juneau typically receives around 40 to 50 inches of snow in December. However, this past December, snow totals surged, setting a record at an astonishing 82 inches.
The Juneau Wharf Authority is currently working to recruit seasonal employees for the summer and has introduced emergency positions to assist with snow removal efforts.
If you notice a vessel at risk of sinking in the Juneau Harbor, officials urge you to contact the Port Authority at 907-586-5255.
