'Sex and the City' actress confesses to unkind behavior towards co-star on set

Kristin Davis has recently expressed her apologies to Bridget Moynahan for her past “mean girl” behavior during their time on the original “Sex and the City” series.

Davis, who is now 60, portrayed Charlotte York, one of the four main characters, alongside Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). Moynahan played Natasha Naginski, Mr. Big’s (Chris Noth) young fiancée introduced in the show’s second and third seasons that aired from 1999 to 2001.

During a podcast episode of “Are You a Charlotte?” hosted by Davis, the two reflected on their experiences from the show. Davis admitted to treating Moynahan poorly, particularly regarding her debut episode.

“Normally, I would try to be friendly with a guest star—usually a man—because, well, it’s intimidating,” Davis explained.

Yet, she noted that her portrayal of Charlotte’s worldview impacted how she interacted with Moynahan, leading to her less-than-kind behavior. “I think I was unkind because you were like a nemesis,” Davis remarked, adding, “I’m really sorry about that, Bridget.”

Moynahan responded graciously, saying she wouldn’t hold Davis’s past actions against her. “Oh, I’m good now,” she chuckled.

Davis reflected on the challenges of youth and on-set dynamics, saying, “I just feel bad because we were all young, you know?” This sentiment was echoed by Moynahan, who assured her co-star not to worry.

As you might expect, their off-camera encounters presented some confusion for Moynahan, who recalled meeting Davis at the gym and questioning why she was being so nice after their work together. “By then, we were just regular people,” Davis said, adding an element of guilt for how she had internalized her character’s perspective.

Moynahan first appeared as Natasha during the show’s second season when she became Mr. Big’s fiancée. The storyline created tension since it was right after Carrie had broken up with Big. Eventually, as the series progressed, Natasha and Big married, but Carrie and Big’s relationship rekindled, leading to Natasha discovering the affair and their eventual divorce.

Moynahan returned to the “Sex and the City” narrative in the revival series “And Just Like That…” in 2021, where she explored her character’s relationship with Carrie after Big’s passing. She described her return as a “really nice reunion.”

Davis mentioned, “Even in that episode, we’re still supporting Carrie and her, let’s say, eccentric ideas, while recognizing the growth in our characters.” Yet, both actresses acknowledged the complexities of their roles, especially Moynahan, who sometimes felt vilified by fans who viewed Natasha as an obstacle to Carrie and Big’s romance.

“Fans loved Big and Carrie together, so I became the villain in a sense. Sometimes I’d have to remind people, ‘No, she was having an affair with my husband!'” Moynahan said, emphasizing the irony of her character’s perception among audiences.
