Shane Gillis says he had a heated exchange off-camera with comedian Nick Saban, who called the legendary Alabama coach a fraud on ESPN's “College Gameday” last month.
Gillis first confronted coaches Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit, who accused the Crimson Tide of cheating by not paying other players. , after saying.
“After I said that, I had to go to the stadium to sit at the desk, so I went in there and he [Saban] It was like, “I heard what you said.” And I thought, 'Oh my god,' but McAfee and Herbstreit were like, 'He's just breaking your balls, dude,'” Gillis, who was a guest picker on ESPN's podcast He spoke on “Talk of the Town.'' .
“He loves to play around with guys. He's literally just like having sex with you,” and I was like, “Oh, I get it.” I would try again with him. ”
Gillis did just that in the following segment before Game 1 of the CFP, Notre Dame vs. Indiana in South Bend.
“I don't think the SEC has ever paid players. Isn't this a fun show? Is this a serious show? Alabama Jones looks very serious,” Gillis said on December 20. He spoke sarcastically on Sunday's broadcast, accompanied by a blushing Saban wearing an Indiana Jones-style hat.
Saban responded, “I believe in integrity, and that's how I ran my program…that's how I cheated and how I developed players.”
After that viral exchange, Gillis had little doubt that Saban was actually upset.
“And as soon as I got done, I said to Herbstreit and McAfee, 'Brother, he was definitely serious.' And they said, 'There's no way he was serious.' That's what I say. Go and talk to him,'” Gillis cheerfully recalled.
Things didn't go as Herbstreit and McAfee expected.
“So I went to him [Saban] He said, “You think the SEC took over because we cheated?'' That's bull. 'He spat at me,'' Gillis said.
“I had to help him after he yelled at me. [off the stage]And he looked around to see if anyone else could help him, but I had to help him. ”
Saban, 73, led Alabama from 2007 to 2023, winning seven national titles during that time.
