Shane Gillis to Host ‘Saturday Night Live’ Less than 5 Years After NBC Preemptively Fired Him

Feb. 4 (UPI) — Stand-up comedian Shane Gillis will guest host Saturday Night Live on Feb. 24.

Bud Light also announced a new partnership with Gillis, who headlined a hit Netflix special last week. Shane Gillis: Beautiful dogs.

He was hired as a cast member on Season 45 of the sketch comedy show, but was fired in late 2019, before the season even started, after videos of him making jokes about race and sexuality surfaced online.

“After discussions with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL,” a show source said in a statement.

“We want SNL to have a variety of voices and perspectives on our show, and we hired Shane because of his talent as a comedian and his great audition for SNL. The language he used was offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable. I was unaware of his previous comments that surfaced in We regret that it did not meet our standards.”

Gillis responded with a statement of his own (now X) on Twitter.

“I’m a funny enough comedian to be on SNL. You can’t take that away,” Gillis said.

“Of course I wanted the chance to prove myself on SNL, but I understand that it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I honestly appreciate this opportunity. ” he added. “If you look back at my 10 years of comedy, you’ll find most of it terrible, and plenty of terrible failures. I’m happy to apologize to anyone who was actually offended by anything I said.”
