It seems the situation surrounding Shane Rawley at the PGA Championship last Friday is starting to make more sense.
After the event, Laurie, who is 38 and didn’t make the cut, mentioned he wasn’t upset with the officials but rather with a commentator from ESPN.
“When the ESPN guy wasn’t asked, it indicated he was a bit too involved,” Laurie shared with an independent source. “I was asking the rules official, and then the ESPN guy jumped in and said, ‘That’s not your pitch mark.’ I was thinking, ‘That’s not the point here.’ It was really about me discussing the rules and figuring out the next steps.”
In his game at the PGA Championship, Lowry faced a challenging divot situation on eight holes, and officials did not save his tee shot.
After struggling with the divot, he ended up allowing frustration to boil over—he sliced the club around the divot and, after finishing that hole with a bogey, let out a frustrated exclamation before tossing the ball.
He underscored the importance of being certain about the pitch mark, which, in his view, led to a less than ideal shot.
“I didn’t say it was my pitch mark,” Laurie explained. “I thought I had it right, but then someone just declared it was. I needed to be absolutely sure of it.”
This isn’t the first time Rawley has had a heated moment with a sports reporter. Earlier this season during the Masters, when asked about Rory McIlroy, he had a similar outburst. “I’m not here to discuss Rory for ten minutes,” he stated at that time. “I’m trying to win the tournament too. Yes, I know what you’re looking for, but I just wrapped up and need to focus on my game.”
