Shapiro calls Trump ‘skilled debater,’ Harris ‘tough as nails’

Ahead of next week's presidential debate, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (Democrat) said former President Trump is a “good debater” but Vice President Harris is “very tough.”

Appearing on “The View” on Friday, Shapiro was asked by Alyssa Farrah Griffin, Trump's former White House communications director, whether Harris made a mistake by not explaining to voters why her policy stances had changed since the last campaign.

“She's obviously going to be challenged on some of these things on the debate stage,” Farrah Griffin said.

Shapiro, who was a finalist for Harris' running mate, said he believes it's a “sign of strength” that people evolve and change their opinions on different issues.

“On the debates, listen, we want to criticize Donald Trump, but he's a liar and he has a lot of problems. I think you've said this before, people know who Donald Trump is,” Shapiro said. “He's a skilled debater. He's a guy who will say anything at any time to answer a question well, and he's a showman. He's been on TV before, so don't underestimate Donald Trump.”

While Trump may perform better than expected in Tuesday's debate, Shapiro argued that Harris might do just as well.

“I've known Kamala Harris for 20 years. She's very tough,” he said. “She's a prosecutor. She'll be ready and, as I said before, she'll be ready to go.”

“This is going to be a tough debate,” Shapiro acknowledged.

The highly anticipated debate between Harris and Trump is scheduled to take place at the National Constitution Center in Shapiro's hometown of Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania is a key battleground state where either Harris or Trump is likely to win this election.

Harris has been in western Pennsylvania for almost a week preparing for the debate, a decision that may be aimed at creating a positive atmosphere in the key battleground state.

As of Friday, the presidential race couldn't be closer — Harris and Trump are statistically neck and neck, with seven states on the line for each side — and the stakes are set to be even higher in Tuesday's debate.
