Shaquille O’Neal Discusses NBA Relationships
Shaquille O’Neal recently shared insights about the experiences of NBA players, particularly regarding dating and relationships while traveling from city to city.
On his podcast, co-host Adam Lefcau noted, “In every city, women are looking for you,” but O’Neal disagreed, stating, “It never happened for me.”
He elaborated, calling it a “myth” and recalled his time spent in hotel lobbies, where he didn’t encounter anyone. It’s a bit surprising, really. You’d think it would be different.
Former NBA player Brandon Jennings, who’s also a guest on the show, supported O’Neal’s perspective.
O’Neal further explained that maintaining relationships can be particularly challenging when living a lifestyle synonymous with “the Tiger” in the NBA. He mentioned that once you’ve embraced that intense lifestyle, transitioning to a committed relationship is tough.
“When you’ve lived a certain way and it comes to a halt, you still only know that existence,” he said. “If commitment seems foreign, it often leads to excuses instead of real commitment.”
He emphasized that declaring commitment should mean more than just saying, “You’re my girlfriend.” There’s responsibility involved, and he admitted he didn’t always meet those expectations.
O’Neal described that trying to settle down after a wild lifestyle can be problematic. “Becoming a tame Tiger after living wild? It just doesn’t work for everyone,” he continued, reflecting on his experiences.
O’Neal is known for being candid about his personal life. He talked about his past relationships, including with singer Monica and his former partners.
“My first was my baby’s mother, Arnetta, and then I met Shawnee. She was incredible, and I really messed that up,” he confessed.
He noted that youth often leads to foolish decisions, but he’s grateful for the forgiveness and good relationships he has with his exes now. “I had two perfect women, and yeah, I kind of ruined it,” he said regretfully.
O’Neal was married to Shawnee for nearly nine years before their divorce in 2011. Shawnee also has a son, Myles, from a prior relationship, who took on the O’Neal name.
Reflecting on his time on “The Pivot” podcast, he admitted he didn’t protect his vows. It’s a heavy realization; life lessons often come with time and experience.
