A Florida man was in critical condition but is recovering after being “severely” bitten on his right arm by a shark on Friday, police said.
The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office posted details of the attack and its aftermath on Facebook, saying, “At 11:15 AM today, Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Marine Units responded to a distress call reporting a shark bite.”

“A man on board was severely bitten on his right arm,” according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

“He was bleeding profusely. He was bleeding pretty badly,” Sheriff Bill Leeper added.

The sheriff continued, “Deputies acted quickly to board the boat and apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.”

Once the shark bite victim’s condition was stabilized, officers “piloted the boat to Dee Dee Bartels Boat Ramp, where Fernandina Beach Fire Department was waiting.”

The victim was taken by helicopter to nearby University of Florida Hospital and is “conscious and alert and recovering at a local hospital,” according to the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.
