The New York Police Department (NYPD) has issued a warning to beachgoers after a shark was spotted off the coast of a popular beach.
“Attention! Our drone spotted a shark at Rockaway Beach,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry wrote in a post on X on Thursday afternoon.
Officials said beaches 58 through 81, the boardwalk and beaches 64 through 104 at Rockaway Beach were closed following the second shark sighting.

NYPD drone footage of the shark showed it lurking in shallow, murky waters just off the shoreline.
The NYPD said it would continue to use drone surveillance to watch for additional sharks or swimmers in distress.

“Our goal is to keep the public safe, and new and evolving drone technology makes that possible,” Daughtry said.

The sighting happened as New Yorkers flocked to beaches to beat the heat.

Sharks are not common in New York City waters, but three people were attacked over two days off Long Island last summer.
According to Quogue police, a 47-year-old man was in chest-deep water off Quogue Village Beach in the Hamptons when he felt a bite on his right knee.

Shortly after, a 49-year-old man reported he was bitten on the hand while swimming near Fire Island Pines Beach.
The day before the serial attacks, a 15-year-old female from Robert Moses emerged from the water with three small puncture wounds to her leg after being bitten by an unidentified fish, police said.
