Sharpton Urges Cuomo to Withdraw from NYC Mayoral Race
Pastor Al Sharpton, hosting a segment on MSNBC, encouraged Andrew Cuomo to reconsider his candidacy for the New York City mayoral race. He expressed a desire for Cuomo to think about the best interests of the city’s residents.
On Wednesday, Sharpton stated during MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” “I think it would be wise for Andrew Cuomo to focus on what’s best for New York and consider a more direct competition.”
Cuomo, who has faced several scandals, is currently seeking a political comeback in New York City. Sharpton mentioned that he had already reached out to Cuomo’s team to suggest that he step aside. In response, Cuomo indicated he would withdraw his name from consideration for the New York mayoral election this fall.
Sharpton further added, “He can back one candidate and they can compete for the future of New York.”
A spokesperson for Cuomo responded to Sharpton’s remarks by emphasizing the importance of differing political opinions, stating, “Everyone is entitled to their view.”
The spokesperson also addressed perceptions of political alignments, saying, “While President Trump backs Eric Adams, not everyone in New York leans towards Trump or socialism. Many are moderate, and our priority must be the city’s residents.”
On the same day, former President Donald Trump also voiced his concerns about candidate Zohran Mamdani, vowing to protect New York City from what he described as “socialist policies.” He asserted, “As the U.S. president, I won’t allow this communist influence to ruin the city. I hold all the power and will ensure New York City shines once again.”
After a victory over Cuomo and several others, Mamdani celebrated his success as the Democratic primary winner for mayor. The New York City Election Commission recently announced official voting results, revealing that Mamdani secured a majority of the votes during the final round of ranked choice voting.
Both Eric Adams and Zohran Mamdani have not yet responded to inquiries for comment regarding these developments.
