‘She Had Control Over A Lot Of Our Border Policy’: Vance Spars With ABC Host Over Harris’ Role On Illegal Immigration

Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio on Sunday pushed back against ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl’s claim that Vice President Kamala Harris has never been a “border czar.”

Vance Multiple Interviews In the segment that aired Sunday, Vance criticized Harris for not giving any interviews or press conferences since President Joe Biden gave up his reelection bid on July 21. Vance sparred with Kahl about former President Donald Trump’s promise to deport millions of illegal immigrants, calling Harris a “border czar.” (RELATED: “Trust us, we’re asking”: CNN’s Dana Bash furious when J.D. Vance asks why Kamala hasn’t been interviewed in weeks)

“She wasn’t actually a border patrol officer?” Carl asked.

“Yeah, that’s what the media called her. She took that title,” Vance said. “At the time that deportations were paused, she had control over a lot of border policy. I want to finish that up, John. At the time that deportations were paused, they stopped Donald Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy and resumed capture and release policies,” Vance replied, interrupting Kahl. “They basically opened up our country and now we have a lot of fentanyl, a lot of suffering people, a lot of Americans…” Vance said, before Kahl interrupted him.

clock:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Reported Border Patrol has encountered just under 7.3 million illegal immigrants since the start of fiscal year 2021.

“But how are you going to get 10 to 15 million, 20 million people out of the country?” Kahl asked.

“The first thing we have to do is stop the bleeding, stop the open border, get Kamala Harris out of the country, actually reinstitute Remain in Mexico, rebuild or complete Donald Trump’s border wall, and the bleeding will stop,” Vance said. “Yes, exactly. Once we do that and stop Kamala Harris’ open borders, we have to do something about the people who are already here, and I think that should be dealt with on an incremental basis. We have to deport some people. If you’re not going to deport a lot of people, you’re not going to be willing to have a border when you have 20 million illegal immigrants in this country.”

Kahl questioned whether federal authorities would go door-to-door demanding documents, to which Vance quickly countered, “That’s the wrong attitude.”

“We have 20 million illegal immigrants here. Let’s start with what’s achievable, and then we’ll go from there to what’s achievable,” Vance continued. “I think we’ll be pretty close to solving the illegal immigration problem if we deport a lot of the violent criminals and, frankly, make it harder for illegal workers to get hired. But President Trump is absolutely right. You can’t have a border unless you’re prepared to deport some people. I think it’s interesting that people are focusing on how to deport 18 million people. Let’s start with 1 million. That’s where Kamala Harris failed, and we can go from there.”
