President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has agreed to halt immigration to the United States after a recent meeting.
The president-elect released a statement to Truth Social saying he had “great conversations” with the leaders of America's southern neighbor.
“I had a great conversation with Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She agreed to stop immigration into the United States through Mexico, effectively closing our southern border.” said.
“We also discussed the large influx of drugs into the United States and what can be done to stop the consumption of these drugs in the United States. It was a very productive conversation!” he added .
The president-elect's announcement comes after he recently threatened Mexico and Canada with 25% tariffs on all products if they don't crack down on crime and drugs flowing through the U.S. border.
“As everyone knows, thousands of people are flowing into Mexico and Canada, pushing crime and drugs to unprecedented levels. But it seems like they can't stop trying to cross the borders that are currently open,” he said.
“On January 20th, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada on all products imported into the United States, as one of my first executive orders. “I intend to,” he added. “These tariffs will remain in effect until we stop drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens from invading our country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and right to simply resolve this long-simmering problem. We have the power. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until they do, it's time for them to pay a very dear price!”
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said the tariffs would be met with additional tariffs.
“Until we end up putting ordinary businesses at risk, there will be tariffs on tariffs,” he said at a recent press conference.
