Trump Credits Melania for Military Assistance Shift

On Monday, President Donald Trump indicated that First Lady Melania Trump has significantly influenced his decision to boost military aid to Ukraine.

While discussing his tougher stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump mentioned that Melania was one of the individuals who openly highlighted Putin’s tendency to backtrack on commitments after their discussions about a peace agreement.

“I go home, I tell the first lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.’ She said, ‘Oh, really? Another city was just hit,’” Trump shared, reflecting on their recent dialogue.

Despite several talks aimed at establishing a peace deal, the Kremlin has persisted in launching numerous drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Trump recently characterized this ongoing violence as a pointed insult.

In response to these developments, the 47th president expressed his growing frustration with Moscow, vowing to supply Ukraine with “billions of dollars” in advanced weaponry. He further cautioned that if Putin continues to turn down a U.S.-backed cease-fire proposal within the next 50 days, his administration would enact 100% tariffs on Russian imports.

Melania Trump, who originally comes from Slovenia, has not publicly commented on the conflict in Ukraine. However, her home country has experienced a notably tense relationship with Russia since the invasion began in February 2022. In the initial month of conflict, a Russian airstrike destroyed Slovenia’s consulate in Ukraine amidst the bombardment of Kharkiv, the nation’s second-largest city.

Slovenia, a European Union member, gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, following a short ten-day conflict that precipitated the withdrawal of the Yugoslav army.
