Shedeur Sanders named as Pro Bowl replacement quarterback for Browns rookie

Browns Coach Evaluates Quarterback Competition

Shedeur Sanders, who is set for his second NFL season with the Cleveland Browns, has caught the eye of new head coach Todd Monken. Since taking on his role, Monken has been pondering the team’s quarterback roster, which previously fell under the purview of Kevin Stefanski.

Sanders, picked by the Browns in the fifth round during last year’s draft, is part of ongoing conversations among media and fans, especially regarding who might step up as the starting quarterback after the 2025 season. A new coach often brings fresh perspectives on player roles, and it seems Monken is re-evaluating the entire team setup.

Speaking on Wednesday, Monken acknowledged Sanders’ growth, noting that the young quarterback has significantly improved in his ability to release the ball and grasp offensive concepts. “I think Shedeur has really come a long way,” Monken commented, reinforcing a sense of optimism around the player.

Despite Sanders’ progress, uncertainty remains about his positioning. The Browns recently signed Joe Flacco, and after Flacco was traded to the Bengals, they brought in Dillon Gabriel. This led to Sanders finally getting the chance to start against the Raiders, and following that performance, he was named the starter for the remainder of the season.

As for the current dynamic, both Sanders and Deshaun Watson—who is returning from an Achilles injury—are sharing first-team reps during the team’s second OTA practice. Watson’s tenure in Cleveland hasn’t matched expectations due to injuries since his high-profile trade and massive contract in 2022.

Still, Monken has expressed enthusiasm about Watson’s athletic capabilities upon his return to practice, calling it “exciting” to witness his skills again. He hinted that these abilities could be essential to the team’s success moving forward.

The Browns have additional quarterbacks on the roster, including Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green. However, the real competition seems to be shaping up between Watson and Sanders as they head into training camp this July.

Ultimately, Monken remains cautious about prematurely naming a starting quarterback, emphasizing the importance of observation before making such decisions. “We would like to have all positions filled by late spring, but we cannot guarantee that,” he noted, leaving the door open for further evaluation.

In the meantime, both Sanders and his teammates are eager to prove themselves to the new coach.
