Sheriff Nolan Wells cautions against rushing the death investigation as the teen's last moments stay unclear.

The sheriff in charge of the investigation concerning the sad disappearance and death of Nolan Wells is urging caution against hastily jumping to conclusions. This comes a week after his body was found amidst rising curiosity about the circumstances surrounding his final moments.

Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old promising football player, was discovered dead last Monday, just two days after he went missing during a boat trip with friends on the Fourth of July. Investigators aren’t revealing the details of his death or how things unfolded, which has led to rampant speculation.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter emphasized the importance of a careful and thorough investigation, despite the growing pressure for answers.

“The family of Nolan Wells is entitled to a comprehensive investigation, and that’s exactly what they’re receiving,” he stated in a conversation with ABC News.

“I think it’s crucial that we avoid setting deadlines and rushing through this process, but we also must diligently collect all the facts.”

Mr. Ledbetter made a heartfelt plea for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

“Even if you think what you know is minor. Every detail could be significant. It could provide more insight into the case than you realize,” he added.

Wells, who played wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, had been on Horn Island with friends, but Ledbetter previously suggested that Nolan might have opted to stay there instead of returning to the mainland.

This account seems to contradict statements from one of Wells’ friends who was with him on that day.

Javon Williams remarked, “I wasn’t aware Nolan was planning to come back while the others were gone.” He continued, “He’s the type of person who always returns with those he rides with.”

Trasestine Shepherd, another friend who was with Nolan during the incident, indicated that they had been consuming alcohol, even though they were underage.

Ledbetter noted that these claims had “come to our attention,” but he refrained from commenting further.

“We’re working with the information we have, actively looking for factual data, witnesses, and first-hand accounts related to this case,” he mentioned.

The exact cause of Wells’ death has yet to be determined, although investigators suspect drowning. Autopsy results are still pending.

Renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump stressed last week his commitment to uncovering the truth for Wells’ family, asserting that an independent autopsy would be conducted.

“It’s a common reality for many Black Americans that when children lose their lives under dubious circumstances, the presumption is often that everything was fine and there’s nothing to investigate,” he remarked during a press conference in Harlem.

“We will not allow this case to be covered up. We won’t let Nolan Wells’ death go without accountability. We aim to uncover the complete and unvarnished truth, as he deserves nothing less.”

An independent autopsy was anticipated to yield results last Friday, though delays occurred due to flight cancellations, as Crump explained.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed alarm when informed by authorities that her son’s death was likely due to accidental drowning.

“Why the rush?” she questioned.

Crump brought up potential scheduling issues, noting that Wells’ body wasn’t recovered until Monday rather than the day before.

“His body was expected to be found on July 5th,” he said. “Why did it take until July 6? If he had gone back to the island, there should have been boats around. There should have been people. It just doesn’t add up.”

Rumors and a viral video suggested Wells might have been involved in a confrontation before he went missing, though Shepherd downplayed those claims.

Crump noted that Wells had demanded, “give me my freaking cell phone,” while Shepherd claimed it was actually Wells shouting.

“I was the one who yelled, ‘Get off this damn ship!'” Shepherd stated, adding, “I wanted to confront someone, but it felt like I didn’t handle things properly.”

He recounted being confronted while he was arguing with his girlfriend.
