Sherrill describes the investigation of Ciattarelli's military records as a 'witch hunt' in the New Jersey election.

New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Accuses Rival of “Witch Hunt”

Mikie Cheryl, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate from New Jersey, has publicly charged her Republican opponent, Jack Ciattarelli, with launching a “witch hunt” after he disclosed details about her military records.

“He was caught red-handed. If has anything to say now, he should start turning it around,” Cheryl remarked to reporters following an event in Wildwood Crest earlier this week.

The governor’s race is heating up, especially after a recent report from New Jersey surfaced, indicating that Cheryl’s military records showed she was barred from participating in her graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy due to allegations of fraud.

Ciattarelli’s campaign has criticized Cheryl, who pursued a career as a helicopter pilot after her academy tenure, and has shared parts of her military records to justify his stance.

As the countdown to the elections continues, tensions are escalating. Cheryl is facing scrutiny not just from Ciattarelli, but also overall Democratic leaders who are calling for an investigation.

Cheryl voiced her outrage: “When employing questionable tactics against your opponent, nothing goes unnoticed. This is absolutely unacceptable,” she stated during a speech in Plainfield.

The National Archives has since issued an apology, acknowledging that an unidentified individual mistakenly released sensitive information related to Cheryl’s military service.

Following the records breach, Cheryl’s campaign reached out to the National Archives as well as Ciattarelli’s strategists, urging the return of any obtained documentation.

In response, Ciattarelli’s campaign has dismissed the claims of intentional wrongdoings and suggested that Cheryl might be using the incident to draw attention away from issues surrounding her military history.

“It’s absurd for her to label this as a witch hunt,” said Chris Russell, a top strategist for Ciattarelli. He insisted that the goal is simply to clarify Cheryl’s past at the academy, particularly given what he referred to as “harsh punishments” she faced there.

Cheryl maintains her innocence amid allegations, stating, “I was unaware of any misconduct when I took a test that was later deemed compromised.” She emphasizes her commitment to transparency, indicating she’s ready to prove her integrity.

When questioned about why she hasn’t released her own records, Cheryl indicated that they showcase her accomplishments: “I’ve earned my medals and certifications; they should be recognized.” She also suggested that Ciattarelli is deflecting from his own legal issues.

The back-and-forth between the candidates mirrors the close race they’re in as New Jersey heads into a critical election season, which could set the tone ahead of mid-term elections next year.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only states conducting statewide elections in the post-presidential election year, and this year’s contests are drawing notable attention.
