Sherrill states 'New Jersey is a blue state' even with tight governor's election

New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Mikie Sherrill Declares State a Democratic Stronghold

During a campaign event with former President Barack Obama, New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill asserted on Saturday that the state remains firmly Democratic, pushing back against any Republican advances.

“New Jersey is not a red state. I love you all, but New Jersey is not a red state,” she remarked to her supporters as she prepares for Election Day against Republican contender Jack Ciatarelli.

She confidently claimed, “And here’s even better news: New Jersey isn’t a purple state… New Jersey is a blue state! That’s right! I’ve seen the vote count, folks. So if we vote, we win,” emphasizing the importance of participating in the election.

A recent poll indicates that Sherrill has a 52% to 45% lead over Ciatarelli, which, though positive, is just outside the margin of error. Earlier this month, her lead was noted at 5 points, with an 8-point advantage reported in September.

Interestingly, Ciatarelli does have an edge—leading by 5 points among those who are extremely enthusiastic about voting. However, Sherrill ties in that enthusiasm category, holding a 4-point lead among those who are generally excited about casting their ballots. It seems more respondents express strong enthusiasm for Republican candidates (52%) compared to Democrats (40%).

On the same day, President Obama was scheduled to campaign for former House Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, who is contesting against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears. He would later join Sherrill at her event in Newark, indicating his support for both candidates.

Sherrill criticized former President Donald Trump at her event, stating, “What we’re looking at is a president who’s destroying jobs, destroying our economy, and extorting us globally. He’s appropriated billions to claim more from us.” She emphasized her desire for a different leadership style, saying, “We don’t want a king. That’s right. That’s why I’m running for governor.”

In a reflective moment, she noted that it’s not unreasonable to advocate for investment in workers and good wages. “There are only two states in the nation that have this kind of population: New Jersey and Virginia,” she concluded.
