Former Michigan State Employee Reacts to Sherone Moore’s Sentencing
A former employee of Michigan State expressed dissatisfaction regarding Sherone Moore’s seemingly lenient sentence following an inappropriate relationship that led to his termination and arrest.
Moore was let go on December 10 after the revelation of his relationship with Paige Shiver. Shortly after his dismissal, he faced charges for allegedly breaking into Shiver’s home and making threats against himself.
Ultimately, Moore received 18 months of probation and was fined over $1,000, but Shiver felt this was insufficient punishment.
Shiver, in a statement to the New York Post after the sentencing, described December 10 as the “scariest day” of her life. She shared, “His criminal acts were extremely frightening and violent. He broke into my apartment, cried, screamed, became furious and even attacked me with a knife. I felt threatened and feared for my life.” She further asserted that the sentence did not adequately reflect the harm she endured or the evidence presented.
A statement from a legal group representing Shiver alleged that she had “endured years of manipulation, harassment, and exploitation” by Moore, who held significant power as head coach of a reputable college football program. Shiver’s attorney expressed concerns about the broader implications, suggesting that she might not be the only one who experienced inappropriate behavior from Moore.
Reports indicate that Moore and Shiver had a longstanding, intimate relationship, and during a court hearing, Moore acknowledged the support of his wife, addressing the severity of the situation. The judge commented on the circumstances of the case, referring to the victim’s experiences as deserving recognition.
Prosecutors accused Moore of attempting to contact Shiver and others after their breakup, indicating he had pressured her to partake in the investigation concerning his actions. Following his firing, Moore allegedly proceeded to Shiver’s residence, where he threatened her with a butter knife and kitchen shears, stating, “My blood is on your hands” and “You ruined my life.”
Moore ultimately accepted a plea agreement, leading to the resolution of a felony case with two misdemeanor charges. He concluded his time as head coach with a record of 16-8, managing to achieve 8-5 in his first season and 7-3 in his latest, and faced a suspension amid an investigation into sign stealing.
