Reports suggest that allegations of misconduct involving former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore were already known to university officials over the past two seasons, according to multiple sources.
Moore, aged 39, was dismissed on Wednesday due to an “inappropriate” relationship with a staff member. He was later taken into custody by police on assault charges.
“This has been the worst-kept secret,” one insider commented, noting that rumors of potential impropriety had been circulating for quite some time.
A prominent Michigan booster stated earlier this month that Schembechler Hall, the football facility, was “filled with lawyers.” They remarked, “Everyone involved has been aware of this for the past two seasons.”
It’s a troubling situation for everyone connected to the program, as this may lead to more issues for players, coaches, and families, the booster added, expressing concern over Moore’s uncertain future.
One agent mentioned that, while the allegations did not surprise him, he was curious about the timing of Moore’s firing, given that most coaching transitions had already been sorted out.
Another source speculated that Moore’s departure aligns with Michigan’s future plans, hinting at possible preparations for a new coaching direction.
Moore had signed a five-year contract last year, which included a base salary of $5.5 million. Since his termination was for cause, the university will not need to honor the remainder of the contract financially.
Following recent coaching changes, several candidates have been linked to the Michigan program, including known names like Karen DeBoer and Brian Kelly.
According to available records, Moore allegedly entered the apartment of Paige Shiver, a recently promoted executive assistant related to a longtime Chicago Bears scout.
He is expected to appear in court on Friday regarding the assault charges but has not yet been formally charged with a crime.
Moore’s attorney declined to comment, stating that the University of Michigan will conduct its own investigation. He is the father of three daughters, and his wife, Kelly, recently had a baby.
For now, Francis “Biff” Poggi will step in as interim head coach for the upcoming Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31.
