Poaching Season in Ann Arbor: Bryce Underwood in the Spotlight

It’s that time of year in Ann Arbor, and a former standout player may be at the forefront of potential recruitment. Coach Pat McAfee discussed how teams are capitalizing on the turmoil at Michigan State following the firing of coach Sherone Moore due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

McAfee highlighted that quarterback Bryce Underwood, who is widely regarded as the top prospect for 2025, has seemingly distanced himself from Michigan State by removing references to the school from his Instagram profile. This has sparked speculation about his future.

Interestingly, while Underwood’s social media changes are raising eyebrows, his Instagram still showcases him in his Michigan jersey, loaded with moments of him supporting the Wolverines.

“Michigan State is in a position to target any coach they desire for the next two weeks,” McAfee remarked on his show.

Moore’s dismissal comes right before the transfer window opens on January 2nd, allowing teams until January 16th to acquire players from other programs.

Coaching changes often lead to upheaval, as some players may reconsider their loyalty to a program if they were brought in by the former coach.

If Underwood decides to enter the transfer portal, he could be a highly sought-after player. After initially committing to LSU but later switching to Michigan, there’s a chance he could explore options beyond the Wolverines.

Barstool’s Dave Portnoy reportedly played a role in encouraging Underwood to stay in Michigan, which adds a layer of local pride to his story.

There are various reports circulating about the financial aspects of Underwood’s contract. While some sources claim he signed a four-year deal worth $10 million for NIL, others suggest he could make up to $12 million.

The previous transfer window saw Tennessee and quarterback Niko Iamareaba embroiled in a public spat, demonstrating that such deals are flexible and can unravel quickly.

Iamareaba transferred after Tennessee chose not to extend his contract, with coach Josh Heupel remarking there was no player superior to the program.

Latest Developments Surrounding Sherone Moore’s Departure

I think it’s important to note that the quarterback joined UCLA, a team that’s been struggling lately.

For now, there’s no chatter about Underwood wanting to leave Ann Arbor, but earlier this year, Portnoy stated he wouldn’t support a renegotiation if it came down to that.

“If someone approached me and said, ‘Hey, Bryce, it’s $20 million,’ I think he’d have room to bounce back if he wanted,” Portnoy shared during a recent podcast episode.

Portnoy’s comments suggest a level of uncertainty about what the future holds for Underwood, especially if he seeks to revisit his current deal.

Underwood’s original commitment was to LSU under coach Brian Kelly, and now, Lane Kiffin is at the helm for the Tigers.

Sophomore Michael Van Buren ended the offseason leading the Tigers by starting eight games at Mississippi State and three more at LSU last season.

Portnoy previously expressed skepticism about Underwood returning to LSU, feeling that the circumstances were unlikely to unfold that way.

As for Michigan State, potential new head coach Karen DeBoer will have the tough task of retaining talent like Underwood, which may define his initial success.
