Potential Delivery Delays for U.S. Customers
Customers in the U.S. might experience delivery delays after UPS and FedEx halted MD-11 cargo shipments on Friday, following safety recommendations from Boeing.
This grounding impacts around 9 percent of UPS Airlines’ fleet and comes in the wake of a tragic crash in Louisville that resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including a child. The UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after taking off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport due to a fire in its left wing, which led to the engine separating.
Boeing has recommended that both airlines pause MD-11 operations until engineers finish a necessary safety assessment.
A representative from Boeing noted, “Boeing’s Safety Review Board has evaluated all available information and concluded that further technical analysis is required. We have recommended temporarily suspending fleet operations to complete our analysis and any needed corrective actions.”
FedEx mentioned to The Hill that they conduct a “thorough safety review based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.” The company added, “We are immediately implementing contingency plans within our integrated air and ground network to minimize disruption.”
In a statement about the suspension, UPS described it as a proactive decision, emphasizing that “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our employees and the communities we serve.”
Tom Goldsby, a supply chain expert at the University of Tennessee, commented to the Associated Press that businesses and consumers often lack understanding of logistics complexity. He shared, “We do not foresee any disaster or worst day for our logistics operations.” Despite the immediate challenges, he believes customers will likely accept any delays, saying, “We understand the situation and will be happy to receive it when it arrives.”
Experts anticipate that disruptions during the busy holiday shipping season will be limited, as companies implement backup plans. Meanwhile, the FAA continues its investigation into the Louisville incident.
