Milan Mural Honoring Victims of Hamas Attack Vandalized Again

A mural in Milan, Italy, dedicated to Siri Vivas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, who were tragically killed by Hamas, has been vandalized yet again—just a few weeks after a previous act of destruction. This recent incident involved removing the Star of David and damaging Siri’s likeness to the point where she is nearly unrecognizable.

Contemporary artist Alessandro Palombo expressed his outrage, stating that the individuals responsible for this act are “cowards who despise the West and our values of freedom.”

Palombo had created this mural as a tribute to the victims, and he believes that alterations to the artwork symbolize much more than mere defacement. He argues that removing the Star of David and obscuring Siri’s face represents an effort to erase history and deny the existence of certain communities, as well as an ideological push against democratic coexistence.

This event follows an earlier commemoration held outside the Qatari consulate, where a piece of artwork by Vancouver artist iHeart was used, depicting a crying boy remorseful over a lack of social media attention. Vandals adapted this image to include political messages, including “No to war,” further complicating the narrative surrounding the mural.

Palombo characterized the destruction as an “act of anti-Semitism,” underscoring the lack of safety for Jewish individuals, even in Europe. He pointed out that the Israeli flag was not just a protective element for the children in the mural but also represented their identity and belonging.

Palombo received news of the mural’s complete vandalism via a private social media message. Currently, it’s uncertain whether the mural will be repaired or recreated. Nevertheless, he remains resolute in his mission: “I will respond, as I always have, by not taking a step back and continuing with my art.” He views each attempt to erase such work as a chance to reaffirm cultural identity.

The artist has faced similar acts of vandalism in the past, including works honoring Holocaust survivors. Palombo concluded by emphasizing his determination to persist in his artistic endeavors despite the rise of extremist viewpoints in today’s society.
