Chief Justice John Roberts has temporarily paused an order mandating the Trump administration to repatriate individuals associated with the MS-13 gang.
The Trump administration requested the Supreme Court earlier on Monday to prevent an order that would require Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was sent back to El Salvador in March, to be returned by 11:59 PM.
“The United States cannot ensure the success of critical international talks, particularly before anything else, when courts impose a ridiculously tight and obligatory deadline that considerably hampers the negotiation process of foreign relations,” the administration stated in an emergency filing on Tuesday. “The United States does not govern the sovereign nation of El Salvador and cannot compel Salvador to adhere to the demands of federal judges.”
Roberts asked for a reply to the administration’s filing by 5 PM on Tuesday.
