In the aftermath of San Francisco’s loss in Super Bowl IV, Kyle Shanahan and the team parted ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes.
Of course, mainstream sports media is already playing the race card, claiming that Kyle Shanahan used Wilks as a scapegoat because of his race.
Jason Whitlock disagrees.
“I don’t think Steve Wilkes got the most out of the best defensive talent in the National Football League,” Whitlock said.
Others have argued that Shanahan never cared about Wilkes and needs to hire someone he truly believes in, but Whitlock doesn’t think that’s possible anymore.
“He doesn’t really have the freedom to do that in the National Football League, which is all about diversity and equity and inclusion,” he explains. “Sometimes you have to make compromising decisions because you want to play the optical game and you want to make sure you have enough diversity on your team.”
Not only that, but the defense won’t have a winning game in Sunday’s Super Bowl, and most past 49ers defensive coordinators have always utilized a strong defensive line.
“I wasn’t impressed with San Francisco’s defense in the Super Bowl on Sunday,” Whitlock said, adding, “Steve Wilkes had a top-five defense. That’s what you should do with that kind of talent.”
