Santa Monica Shopkeeper Defends Against Intruders

California State Police report that a shopkeeper in Santa Monica took action to protect his shoe store and himself from two men allegedly intent on doing harm.

The Santa Monica Police were alerted to the incident at the “Sole & Race” store located on the well-known Third Street Promenade around 9:30 PM on a Sunday. As detailed by local news sources, police responded promptly to the scene.

“He handled the situation and defended his store, himself, and his family,” a witness commented.

According to real estate manager John Ale, the store owner was conducting sales after hours when the attempted robbery unfolded. One of the suspects was allegedly familiar with a customer involved in the transaction. It appears the suspect entered through the back door and attempted to incapacitate the owner using chemical means.

During a struggle that ensued, the shopkeeper managed to grab his gun and shot the would-be robber. Authorities confirmed that the injured individual later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. It turns out the shopkeeper was legally permitted to carry the firearm.

In an unexpected twist, police apprehended Karen Melikyan, a customer who had arranged the meeting with the owner, suspecting him of conspiring in the robbery attempt. He now faces charges including murder, conspiracy, and armed robbery.

Despite the intense incident, the shopkeeper was reportedly shaken but unharmed. “He took care of things and defended his store, himself, and his family with his gun,” added another source.

Many business owners in Santa Monica share their concerns about the economic climate. “A lot of retailers are struggling,” one local remarked. “Reporting crime can jeopardize their insurance, and it seems easier to just endure.”

While cooperating with the investigation, the shopkeeper has not been arrested. The situation has raised discussions about safety and crime in the area.

Interestingly, the store’s social media claims it to be “the best sneaker spot from Bay to LA,” hinting at its popularity despite the recent turmoil.
