Tragic Shooting at Teotihuacan Pyramid
A Canadian woman was killed, and several others were injured on Monday during a shooting at Mexico’s famous Teotihuacan pyramid. The gunman later took his own life, according to local authorities.
Reports indicate that four individuals sustained injuries from the shooting, with an additional two injured from a fall. Among the injured were tourists from Colombia, Russia, and Canada.
Weapons, including firearms and knives, along with live ammunition, were discovered at the scene, as confirmed by Mexico’s Security Cabinet via social media.
Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences for the victims and stated that consular staff were reaching out to provide support to their families.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum shared her sorrow over the incident on social media, pledging that a thorough investigation would take place and asserting her communication with the Canadian embassy.
“What happened today in Teotihuacan hurts us deeply,” Sheinbaum commented. “We express our heartfelt solidarity with the victims and their families.” Additionally, she directed the Security Cabinet to look into the matter and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
Officials from various ministries, accompanied by local authorities, are already present at the site to support victims and address the situation. The pre-Hispanic city of Teotihuacan, situated near Mexico City, holds historical significance as one of Mesoamerica’s key cultural centers.
