Shooting in Minnesota prompts response from Charles Barkley

Barkley Critiques Federal Authorities After Shootings

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley voiced his concerns regarding federal actions following two recent incidents that resulted in fatalities.

The latest incident involved a shooting by Border Patrol that claimed the life of a Minneapolis resident named Alex J. Preti. Reports indicate he was shot after allegedly confronting agents during a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operation south of the city.

This event follows another incident where a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good. According to DHS, Good allegedly acted dangerously by using his vehicle to block federal officers. They stated that surveillance footage captured him blocking their path deliberately.

Barkley expressed his sadness during an appearance on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA,” where he stated, “I think her name was Renee Goode. It’s just really sad. I mean, two people have died for no reason, and we need to figure this out.” His sentiment reflects a growing frustration surrounding these events.

Additionally, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ game against the Golden State Warriors was postponed due to this shooting situation.

Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino clarified that the DHS operation targeted Jose Huerta-Chuma, an undocumented immigrant with a history of serious offenses including domestic assault.

During the operation, Preti allegedly approached the agents brandishing a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, as stated by DHS. Officials mentioned that Preti had a legal carry permit.

Commander Bovino emphasized that the officers involved in the shooting were well-trained, having served as Border Patrol agents for several years. The investigation is currently being led by DHS, with the FBI providing support.

In response to the situation, President Trump took to Truth Social to question the lack of local police involvement during the confrontation, raising concerns about why they weren’t present to assist ICE officers. He remarked, “This is a gunman’s gun, loaded with two full magazines!”

The ongoing dialogue highlights the complexities surrounding law enforcement actions and community safety in such tense situations.
