Incident Near the White House
On Monday, gunfire erupted near the White House and the Washington Monument, prompting a response from the Secret Service, which cordoned off the nearby areas.
The U.S. Secret Service reported that law enforcement shot and killed a suspect, while a bystander was also injured at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue. Thankfully, both individuals are alive, as confirmed in a press conference that day. According to national correspondent Susan Crabtree, the confrontation began when agents noticed an armed man prior to an event featuring President Trump in the East Room.
“U.S. Secret Service personnel are currently managing an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. One person was shot and killed by law enforcement, and their condition remains unclear. We advise avoiding the area while emergency services are on scene,” the Secret Service stated.
During the press briefing, it was clarified that a bystander was indeed hit by the suspect’s actions, but both were reported to be safe. Plainclothes agents had approached the suspect after spotting firearm marks on his clothing, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect is now in custody and recovering from a gunshot wound at George Washington Hospital, where his weapon was also recovered by the agents. Fortunately, no Secret Service personnel were injured during the incident.
For safety, media representatives were placed in a designated briefing area as emergency protocols were enacted. The shooting coincided with President Trump’s speech at the Small Business Summit, although he did not comment on the event.
The Secret Service swiftly restricted traffic around the area and established a significant presence alongside the National Guard. A brief lockdown was observed, which affected movement throughout parts of Washington, D.C.
This incident comes shortly after another alarming event where an individual attempted to infiltrate the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with the intention of harming President Trump. The Department of Justice has since charged Cole Allen with attempted assassination, a serious crime carrying a potential life sentence.
