Producer Sidney Brown, known in the industry as “Omen,” was found dead in his East Harlem apartment last week at the age of 49. He collaborated with notable artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, and Beyoncé.
According to his mother, Martha Brown, the family discovered him on September 13th. The city’s Chief Medical Examination Bureau stated that further investigation is ongoing to determine the cause and circumstances of his death.
His family became concerned when he didn’t show up for a scheduled gig at Barawine Harlem, which I imagine must have been quite alarming. His sister, Nicole Iris Brown, mentioned that he seemed healthy, making the sudden nature of his passing all the more shocking.
“I hope people remember him for his support of young artists,” she added. It seems he was committed to helping emerging talent find their footing in the industry.
Barawine, where he had worked for over a decade, expressed deep sorrow in a tribute, reflecting on his unique talent and the impact he had on those around him.
Brown’s career took off in the 1990s, producing tracks for Roc-a-Fella artists, but his significant breakthrough came in 2006 with Ruda Cris’ “Tell It Like It Is,” which won a Grammy the following year. He also co-produced Drake’s track “Shutdown” for his debut album in 2010 and worked on Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” that same year.
In 2013, he co-wrote and co-produced Beyoncé’s “My” featuring Drake, showcasing his versatility and talent in blending different musical styles.
