Significant changes are said to be happening at DHS as the Trump administration aims to boost deportations.

The Department of Homeland Security seems to be adjusting its approach to ramp up the number of daily arrests of undocumented immigrants. This involves replacing leadership within field offices nationwide.

As initially reported, DHS intends to swap field office directors—usually made up of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents—with U.S. Border Protection agents. While both agencies operate under DHS and handle similar immigration tasks, they utilize different strategies to target illegal immigrants.

There is support from the White House for the Border Patrol to take charge of these operations, emphasizing a more aggressive approach, often referred to as “shock-and-awe” tactics.

ICE agents typically focus on undocumented immigrants who have committed other crimes while in the country, gathering information on their past behaviors before making arrests. An important change under the Trump administration allows agents to apprehend other nearby illegal immigrants if the opportunity arises.

Simultaneously, Border Patrol agents have received authorization to conduct daytime raids in sanctuary cities throughout the U.S., aiming to capture unauthorized immigrants and send a clear message that things have shifted from the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the situation. The Border Patrol is motivated to work inland due to what some call the Biden border crisis, which has led to increased illegal immigration.

Raids conducted by the Border Patrol in areas known for undocumented residents have led to the arrests of individuals with serious criminal records.

The White House is backing the Border Patrol as they lead efforts to remove more undocumented immigrants from the country. There have been instances of unrest, with rioters increasingly confronting agents using intimidation tactics.

Recently, DHS shared a video showing a crowd in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood attacking its employees, prompting the use of tear gas as some protesters hurled objects at officials.

Changes in leadership are taking place in key cities, including:

  • Los Angeles
  • Phoenix
  • Philadelphia
  • Denver
  • El Paso
  • San Diego
  • Seattle
  • Portland
  • New Orleans

The different tactics employed by ICE and Border Patrol have reportedly led to heightened tensions between the two agencies, as well as with their allies in DHS and the White House. One DHS official mentioned a sense of “losing its way” by concentrating too much on increasing arrests, while a Border Patrol official pointed out that targeting anyone who is in the U.S. illegally aligns with the meaning of mass deportations.

An assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, stated there are no personnel changes to announce at this moment, affirming that, “This is one team, one fight,” in addressing the dual focus of tackling illegal immigration.
