Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) mentioned on CNN’s “News Central” that he is pushing forward with legislation that enforces human rights reports concerning El Salvador. He indicated there could be “serious repercussions” if violations are identified.
“Our goal is for the administration to adhere to the law. This is a straightforward process, allowing even a single senator to raise the issue, which guarantees that the administration will submit a human rights report on El Salvador within 30 days,” he explained.
He added, “The State Department is required to produce this report within that timeframe, or else all security aid to El Salvador will be halted. We anticipate a vote on this later in the week, which just requires a simple majority.”
“Should the administration fail to provide this human rights report, all security assistance to El Salvador will indeed be suspended. This might involve funds that the president is currently using. There will be repercussions for El Salvador. The Senate must understand if there is collusion with the president that infringes on the constitutional rights of Americans. I expect serious consequences will follow.”
