Conduent Services, which provides “back-office support” for different organizations, has informed patients of Blue Cross Blue Shield about a significant data breach impacting sensitive information, including Social Security numbers.
In a letter sent to patients on October 24, the company said, “We would like to inform you of a recent incident that Conduent, Inc. has recently experienced that may involve some of the personal information we have from providing services to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.”
While Conduent mentioned it was “not aware of” any actual or attempted misuse of patient data, they did provide a list of precautionary measures for customers. Just in case, you know?
Earlier this year, Conduent dealt with a “cyber incident” that impacted part of its network, necessitating an investigation.
The company noted, “Our investigation revealed that from October 21, 2024, to January 13, 2025, an unauthorized third party accessed our environment and obtained several files related to Blue Cross Blue Shield.”
The notification continued, “We are sending you this notice because we recently completed this sensitive data analysis, as the affected files contained your personal information.”
Details that were compromised include patients’ dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers.
To assist those affected, the company is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity recovery services.
What can you do?
Conduent has outlined several steps for BCBS patients to take in order to keep an eye on their personal information.
- 24 months of identity monitoring with Kroll: Visit enroll.kroll.com/redeem and use the activation code from your notification letter. To access this service for free, registration must be completed by March 2026.
- Free credit report: U.S. law entitles you to one free credit report annually from the three major reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can request a report at annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-322-8228.
- Issue a fraud alert: This reminds creditors to verify your identity before allowing the opening of new accounts or making changes. To set this up, call one of the three major credit bureaus. The initial alert stays valid for 90 days, and you can renew it afterwards.
Additionally, Kroll offers identity monitoring services that include credit alerts, fraud consultations, and support from identity recovery specialists if needed.
