Significant decline in Latino backing for Trump surprises Harry Enten

Trump’s Dwindling Support Among Latinos Surprises Analysts

The recent dip in support for President Trump among Latino voters has caught the attention of Harry Enten, CNN’s chief data analyst. On a recent segment, he noted how Trump’s once strong appeal within this demographic has significantly eroded.

Enten pointed out that the support Trump enjoyed, which was pivotal for his victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, is dwindling fast. He attributed this decline, in part, to the president’s controversial immigration policies. “He’s 38 points underwater!” Enten exclaimed, referencing current polling data regarding Latino perceptions of Trump on immigration.

By comparing this data to a poll from October 2024, it showed that Latino voters had given Harris a slight 2-point edge over Trump concerning immigration issues.

Enten emphasized the negative sentiment towards Trump, stating, “Latinos despise and hate Donald Trump when it comes to immigration.” He added that many believe he’s making all the wrong moves on this front.

The overall impression of Trump among Latino voters isn’t looking good. A CBS/YouGov poll revealed that his approval rating dropped from -2 points in February to a worrying -34 points by late October, just before Republicans faced losses in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey. “Oh my god,” Enten responded to these findings.

“Whatever President Trump is trying to do in the hearts of Latinos, it’s clearly not working,” he noted, observing a large-scale shift against him.

To illustrate the implications of Trump’s dwindling popularity among Latinos, Enten analyzed election results from states with significant Latino populations, like New Jersey and Virginia, comparing 2024 numbers to those from the recent elections.

“It makes me laugh because I’ve never seen numbers like this,” he said, referring to a drastic 52-point gap between Democratic Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill and Harris in Union City, New Jersey.

“We got away with this,” noted Sheryl, acknowledging that while Harris did secure votes, it was a tight race.

Similarly, in Manassas Park, Virginia, Democratic Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger experienced a 22-point shift in favor since last November.

Enten countered Republican skeptics, asserting, “Donald Trump had a significant influence on what happened with the down vote.”
