'Silence of the Lambs' actor regrets attacking transgender identity: 'It's really wrong'

Ted Levine Discusses Buffalo Bill’s Character in “Silence of the Lambs”

While Buffalo Bill, the notorious character from “The Silence of the Lambs,” is certainly a chilling figure known for his gruesome acts, actor Ted Levine asserts that the character isn’t inherently transphobic.

Levine, who portrayed the character Jayme Gumm in the acclaimed film, shared his insights recently. “There’s more awareness about transgender issues now, and I’ve learned a lot,” he said. However, he admitted there are lines in the script that could be seen as problematic. “It’s unfortunate that the movie misrepresented that aspect; it’s wrong,” he noted emphatically.

Character Interpretation

The 68-year-old actor emphasized that he never intended for Buffalo Bill to be perceived as transgender. “I didn’t play him as gay or transgender. He was just a disturbed straight man,” Levine clarified.

This perspective was echoed by Edward Saxon, a producer of the film. He remarked, “We stayed true to the book. There was no doubt in our minds that Buffalo Bill was an abnormal character, not gay or transgender, just sick.” Saxon acknowledged a gap in sensitivity towards the harmful legacy of certain stereotypes during the movie’s production.

He elaborated, stating that Buffalo Bill was simply “incredibly sick” and not engaging in homosexual behavior, considering many in the crew were part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Reflections on 35 Years

Levine’s comments came as he reflected on the 35-year anniversary of his iconic role and the impact of one particular line. “It does feel a bit odd reflecting on it now,” he joked about the memories that it brings up, but ultimately, he seems to have a good sense of humor about it.
