Simone Biles and Riley Gaines disagreement prompts response from Stephen A Smith

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith found common ground with former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines amidst her ongoing dispute with Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles.

Smith’s comments emerged after Biles directed personal criticism at Gaines, who had previously expressed her views on a Minnesota softball league’s decision regarding transgender players. Gaines had also criticized Smith for choosing to disable comments on a post that featured state championship teams including transgender players.

In her advocacy, Gaines highlighted instances like the case of Larry Nassar, a former doctor who assaulted several Olympic gymnasts, to argue against men participating in women’s sports. Smith, while acknowledging Gaines’s point, used Nassar’s context to counter her stance but echoed her concerns about fairness in sports.

On “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” he remarked that discussions around transgender athletes transitioning and competing in women’s sports require deeper reflection. He mentioned Leah Thomas, noting how her ranking highlights the complexities of the issue. “She was ranked 554th as a male but competed in women’s sports,” he explained.

Smith also pointed out that many women feel similarly to Gaines regarding these matters. “Women have every right to express their feelings,” he stated, even if the conversation becomes complicated with figures like Biles involved.

He dismissed the notion that the debate is merely about sports competition, emphasizing that it touches broader issues like civil liberties and equality. Smith expressed that while discussions around fear are prevalent, the real conversation should center on fair competition rather than personal freedoms being threatened.

Bringing up a hypothetical fight between Ronda Rousey and Floyd Mayweather Jr., he suggested that fans could predict the outcomes based on gender differences in sports. He expressed that elite women shouldn’t have to compete against their male counterparts, stating a preference for divisions accommodating all participants fairly.

Smith concluded by advocating for a scenario where men transitioning to women could have their own categories in sports. Nevertheless, he remarked that Gaines’s concerns deserve respect and shouldn’t be overshadowed by Biles’s criticisms.

He believes that if both groups can compete fairly across all sports, then everyone benefits. However, he feels that current practices might not fully encapsulate fairness as it stands today.
