Simu Liu Critiques Asian Representation in Hollywood
Actor Simu Liu spoke out against what he sees as a decline in Asian representation in Hollywood during a recent online thread. He shared various reports highlighting the challenges Asian actors face in landing lead roles.
“Put Asians in literally everything right now,” he asserted. “The regression in our representation on screen is frightening. Studios think we’re dangerous.” Liu, known for his role in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” mentioned other successful films with Asian leads, like “Past Lives,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Crazy Rich Asians.”
He emphasized that the recent success of these films disproves the notion that hiring Asian actors is a financial risk. “Every actor is financially successful. No Asian actor has ever lost a studio close to $100 million, but a white actor could lose $200 million twice and quickly move on to the next leading role,” he added. “We’re fighting a system that’s full of bias, and most days, it sucks.”
This isn’t Liu’s first critique of anti-Asian sentiments in the entertainment sector. Back in 2023, he expressed his discontent with a controversial comparison during the NBA Celebrity All-Star Game, which many felt perpetuated stereotypes about Asian appearances.
Liu clarified that his frustration was aimed not at the individual cameraman but rather at the situation overall. He noted, “Let me be clear, the entire organization and operations team surrounding All-Star has been absolutely amazing to me and my friends. This was just one person with a camera.” He emphasized that the discrepancy in appearance was not reflective of a lack of diversity.
In a recent interview, he elaborated on the broader concerns within the Asian acting community, describing the pressure from public opinion, which can feel overwhelming at times. “I feel like there’s something about the internet that drives people crazy… I’m not really cut out for that energy,” he stated. Liu’s willingness to voice his thoughts reflects a growing urgency to tackle these issues head-on in the industry.
