Billie Eilish Critiques ICE Raids Amid Immigration Policy Changes
Pop star Billie Eilish is vocalizing her opposition to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) actions as arrests of undocumented immigrants rise under President Donald Trump’s administration.
On Tuesday, she used her Instagram story to share a post that criticized an ICE raid in Los Angeles, addressing her 124 million followers. The post included a video appearing to show agents conducting an operation at MacArthur Park, with commentary suggesting that children were forced to leave the area during the raid.
Trump, who has focused his campaign on tackling illegal immigration, achieved a significant electoral victory in 2024, gaining not only a stronghold in the Electoral College but also capturing key swing states.
In the meantime, some celebrities are involved in spreading narratives against ICE, at times blurring the lines between undocumented and legal immigrants, which many perceive as a misrepresentation of the situation.
On July 4th, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny released a music video linking legal and illegal immigration. Additionally, last month, Mexican actor Diego Luna criticized the president’s immigration policies, suggesting that many people feel unsafe due to misleading rhetoric equating legal immigrants with those who are undocumented. He argued that the Trump administration is out of touch and noted that undocumented immigrants contributed significantly in taxes, reportedly around $96.7 billion in 2022.
However, what Luna didn’t bring up, is the larger economic implications of illegal immigration. While it’s true that undocumented immigrants can contribute to tax revenue, the overall economic impact—including costs related to education, healthcare, and welfare—can result in a net burden on taxpayers.
In 2017, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimated that illegal immigration costs the U.S. approximately $116 billion when accounting for these factors. Their calculations showed that tax contributions from undocumented individuals ($19 billion) fell short of the wider economic impact ($134.9 billion).
In addition to addressing the presence of undocumented immigrants, Trump is also focused on reducing taxpayer costs through legislation that aims to exclude about 1.4 million undocumented immigrants from Medicaid.
