Trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs Over Sex Trafficking Allegations
Pop singer Dawn Richard was set to resume her testimony in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking trial last week. She had previously told the court about witnessing Combs physically and emotionally abuse his then-girlfriend for years.
Richard, who used to be in the pop group Danity Kane, recounted a disturbing incident from 2009. She claimed that Combs had dragged Cassandra Ventura, his then-girlfriend, by her hair and that she heard him scream and break glass during the altercation.
The following day, Richard testified that Combs contacted her and others who had witnessed these alleged assaults, offering them flowers and warning that their careers would suffer if they spoke out about what they had seen.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit assault, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution. He has been detained in Brooklyn since September when he isn’t in court. If found guilty, he could face a lengthy prison term of up to 15 years to life.
Cassandra Ventura, who is 38 and performs as Cathy, testified for over four days about attending a drug-fueled sex party called “Freak Off,” which is integral to the prosecution’s case. She described enduring years of abuse in her tumultuous relationship with Combs.
Ventura mentioned being pregnant with her third child and completing her testimony last week, recounting a traumatic incident at her home following a breakup in August 2018. “I remember crying and saying no, but it was very fast,” she shared during her testimony.
On Friday, Combs’ attorney attempted to undermine Ventura’s allegations by presenting a text message that suggested she had consensual contact with Combs a month after the alleged assault.
This trial, held in a Manhattan federal courtroom, has attracted significant media attention, largely due to Combs’ wealth and influence in the music industry. It could extend over the course of two months.
Combs, formerly known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, established Bad Boy Records, which was instrumental in launching the careers of several prominent artists, including Mary J. Blige and Notorious B.I.G., during the 1990s and 2000s.
The criminal proceedings are related to Ventura’s civil lawsuit against Combs from November 2023, in which she testified to agreeing to a $20 million settlement shortly after filing.
Richard has also filed a civil suit against Combs, alleging that he subjected her to inhumane working conditions, including groping and various forms of abuse. In her lawsuit, she claims to have witnessed Combs physically assaulting Ventura multiple times.
