Singer Roisin Murphy: 'I Do Not Want Trans Activists at My Concerts, and Neither Do My Fans'

Roisin Murphy Faces Backlash Over Comments on Trans Activists

Irish singer-songwriter Roisin Murphy has recently stirred controversy on social media after expressing her desire not to have “trans activists” attend her concerts, stating that her fans share this sentiment.

In a post on X, Murphy claimed that the transgender community adversely affects gay and lesbian individuals by “altering the historical record, denying their sexual orientation, piggybacking on their rights movements, undermining public acceptance,” and “dismantling their culture.”

She added, “And converting in childhood significantly reduces that number, thereby irrevocably altering future power relations.” This comment was in response to another user who highlighted the historical contributions of trans individuals to the LGBTQ+ community.

Her remarks provoked backlash from some left-leaning fans. One user remarked, “We LGBT+ people live in harmony as a community,” adding a plea for her not to let the situation overshadow her talent or music.

Murphy followed up, insisting she needs to be clear about her stance to ensure audience support, declaring, “It’s important that artists claim territory where they can safely stand.” She further emphasized, “Regardless of whether they recognize my position or not, I don’t want trans activists to come to my concerts. Neither do my fans.” However, she mentioned that everyone else is welcome.

Another fan pointed out, “Trans men are not lesbians,” suggesting that confronting her community wouldn’t strengthen it but rather isolate individuals within it. Murphy responded, stating that many were unaware of the options for gender transition that exist today.

In a follow-up post, Murphy expressed concern for lesbians, saying, “There were never many women who were only attracted to the same sex. Now they are being dismantled.” She voiced her worries about young girls transitioning before having the chance to explore their sexuality and lamented that the culture built by marginalized groups is fading.

This isn’t the first time Murphy has made controversial comments regarding transgender issues. Earlier this year, she criticized puberty blockers and voiced concerns over the vulnerability of mixed-race children in these discussions. Additionally, she expressed frustration over being labeled a “TERF,” urging others to refrain from using such terms against women.
