Sister of ‘friendly guy,’ a hopeful fitness trainer fatally stabbed in NYC deli fight asks assailants: ‘Show yourselves’

A 33-year-old man, Jarvey Barfield, known for his kind nature and aspirations to be a fitness trainer, was brutally stabbed multiple times early Saturday during a brawl at a local deli. He pleaded for the attacker to come forward to the police.

The incident occurred around 5:30 AM at the intersection of Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 142nd Street. It began inside the deli but escalated into the street involving several assailants over a disagreement related to food from 8th Avenue.

Footage shows the conflict moving outside the deli. Barfield, injured, managed to escape but collapsed about a block away. By the time emergency services arrived, he was unconscious.

Living just half a mile from the scene in Hamilton Heights, Barfield was rushed to Harlem Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal fight, Barfield’s family is struggling to process the loss.

His younger sister, Crystal Richardson, described him as a beloved individual. “He was such an adorable guy,” she shared.

She recounted the pain she felt upon receiving news of his death. “When I arrived at the hospital, they made me wait for a long time. They asked me to identify his tattoo. At that moment, I understood what was happening.”

Barfield had previously served time in state prison but was released in 2023. Richardson noted that he was committed to changing his life.

“He was in a good place,” she said, reflecting on his desire to be a fitness trainer. “He was a gentle giant, very muscular but with a soft heart.” The siblings often checked in on each other.

Richardson remembered their last conversation, saying, “I spoke to him that Thursday evening. He was with a friend and mentioned wanting to go home, but wasn’t sure when. He regularly checked in on me.”

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with Barfield’s tragic death. Richardson revealed that authorities had shown her images of potential suspects.

“I recognized them, though I’m not sure who they are,” she mentioned, expressing frustration.

She urged the person responsible to come forward. “You took someone else’s life; you should face the consequences,” she stated. “You killed my brother, and I want you to admit it.”
