The Liberty School District released the following statement to the families of bus 494:

“Bus 494 families,

As we continue to resolve the incident involving the passengers of bus 494 yesterday, we would like to provide you with some updates.

  • Please understand that the safety of our students while at school, in this case on the school bus, is our top priority. We regret that this incident occurred, not only for the student in question, but also for the other students affected. He was a passenger on the bus and witnessed the incident. Our team provided a routine check-in with the students who were on the bus yesterday afternoon to make sure they were doing well at school today.
  • Additional details we would like to share regarding yesterday’s incident were the timeline of the incident and when the arrest of the deputy bus driver occurred. Following an act by a bus driver that occurred on the HMS campus (and just before the scheduled departure time), the student involved was assisted off the bus by his LPS security guard. While attempting to sort out the situation and await the arrival of the Liberty Police Department, the bus driver was told to remain on the bus, but instead chose to begin his route and left campus. Within minutes, about a mile from the school, the bus driver was stopped by his LPD and arrested. While LPD investigated the incident, another LPS transportation driver arrived and assisted in transporting the student rider home.
  • LPS was notified by LPD that the driver was charged with a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault. Additionally, the driver was fired from the district.

As I mentioned yesterday, a huge thank you to both the Liberty Police Department and the LPS Safety and Security Team for their quick response to this incident. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
