Shooting in Jerusalem Leaves Six Dead
On Monday, a tragic shooting incident at a bus stop in North Jerusalem resulted in the deaths of at least six people, while several others were injured, according to multiple sources and officials.
Israel’s National Emergency Medical Services reported that five individuals died at the scene, with seven others in serious condition from their injuries. The Jerusalem Post confirmed the six fatalities, stating that the assailant opened fire on civilians, leading to numerous serious injuries, including the death of a 60-year-old woman, alongside two rabbis and a Spanish immigrant.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, during a visit to Hungary, noted the six people who lost their lives. Reports indicate that both gunmen involved in the shooting were also killed, as per police statements cited by CBS News.
Witnesses described the bus as being “packed” with people when the gunman started shooting as soon as it arrived at the bus stop.
Medical teams faced a challenging scene, with a paramedic stating that the injured were lying on the road and sidewalk. It has been suggested that the assailants utilized illegal submachine guns during the attack, as indicated by images from the scene. Security officials have identified the attackers as Palestinians from the West Bank, although investigations into their identities are ongoing.
“This morning there was a horrific terrorist attack in our capital, Jerusalem,” the Israeli Foreign Minister remarked. He noted that the two gunmen targeted civilians on a bus at Lamot Junction, reporting six fatalities at that time.
In a statement, Palestinian authorities voiced their condemnation of violence against both Palestinians and Israelis, asserting their opposition to any form of aggression.
Interestingly, while Hamas, which previously carried out attacks on Israeli citizens, did not formally claim responsibility for the shooting, they referred to it as a “natural response” to the ongoing conflict, advocating for increased confrontation against occupation.
In the wake of the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized that such acts of violence would not weaken their resolve, stating that these attacks only strengthen their commitment to their goals.
Netanyahu had been scheduled for a public trial hearing but postponed it in light of the tragic events.
