SJSU women’s volleyball player praises Nevada team for raising concerns about playing vs trans opponent

San Jose State women's volleyball player Brooke Slusser praised the Nevada Wolf Pack players for speaking out against a team that includes a transgender player.

Mr. Slusser expressed his support for X.

“I applaud the girls on the (Nevada Wolf Pack) volleyball team,” Slusser wrote to X. “It takes courage as a young woman to rebel against what your school has forced you to do and stand up for what you believe in!” A great step in the right direction for women's sports! ”

The problem for Nevada and some other schools is playing against Blair Fleming. A transgender female player was seen hitting an opponent in the face with a ball during a match.

Nevada players initially said: Statement to OutKick On Monday, they planned to forfeit their game against the Spartans in order to “stand in solidarity” with Southern Utah, Boise State, Wyoming and Utah State, which also forfeited their games against the Spartans.

“We demand that our rights to on-court safety and fair competition be protected,” the statement continued. “We refuse to participate in any matches that promote injustice against female athletes.”

However, the school said in a statement Monday night that the team has no intention of forfeiting the game.

“The players' decisions and statements were made independently and without consultation with the university or the athletic department. The players' decisions do not represent the university's position,” the statement said.

“The university and its athletic programs are governed by the Nevada Constitution and Nevada law, which provide strict protections for equality of rights under the law, and that equality of rights is not guaranteed by the state or its territories on grounds of race. The University shall not be denied or diminished by any person's color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin, and the University shall comply with federal law and the NCAA and Also complies with Mountain West Conference rules and regulations. We offer competition in an inclusive and supportive environment.

“The University intends to proceed with the game as scheduled, and players may choose not to participate on game day. Teams will not be subject to disciplinary action for their decision not to participate.” ”

Slusser, who joined the team in 2023 after transferring from Alabama, is suing the NCAA, led by former college swimmer and Outkick contributor Riley Gaines, over the governing body's current policies regarding gender identity. Participated in

According to court documents, Slusser claimed he did not know Fleming was transgender, even though they shared a room on a team trip. Slusser also expressed concern for the safety of Fleming's opponents. Slusser's complaint states that she and other players on her team were “completely unable to protect themselves” from Fleming's volleyball spikes.
