Angel Studios Unveils New Film “Sketch”
Monsters might draw audiences in, but Angel Studios’ latest movie, Sketch, aims to tell a more profound story. According to the film’s producer, it’s a work that resonates with almost everyone who sees it. This PG-rated film follows the journey of a 10-year-old girl named Amber, whose unsettling drawings of terrifying monsters serve as warnings not just for her father but also for her friends and school counselors. As Amber copes with the loss of her mother, she faces the everyday challenges that come with school life.
Her drawings take on an eerie quality when they seem to come to life.
The film’s main theme revolves around grief and the various ways individuals cope with loss.
Tony Hale, known for his roles in Toy Story 4 and Veep, plays the father, while D’Arcy Carden from The Good Place portrays his sister, and Bianca Bell stars as Amber.
“Her dad is doing his best to support Amber and her brother Jack through this tough time. He doesn’t really think that talking about it is enough,” says Hale.
The counselor encourages Amber to keep drawing monsters, believing that her sketchbook offers a “safe space where those emotions can’t hurt anyone.” The film delves into whether Amber’s art aids her healing or opens a door to darker experiences.
The monsters range from bizarre to genuinely creepy.
“We describe it as a mix of Turn It Over and Jurassic Park, which isn’t a bad way to put it, yet it remains firmly in the family-friendly PG category,” Taylor mentioned.
Sketch currently holds a 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, a notable achievement for a live-action family film. While the Irwin brothers are known for producing faith-based films, this one contains only a few obvious religious elements, yet its underlying message is rooted in biblical truths.
“It’s crucial to support original family films, especially since a lot of what’s being made these days is clickbait or reliant on existing franchises,” Taylor added. “I think it’s a fun movie, and we need more creativity like this. Nowadays, it seems like everything is just a sequel or remake.”
