Slotkin states she would have voted against arms sales to Israel

On Thursday, Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan shared that she voted against arms sales to Israel due to the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This statement followed her recent appearance on Stephen Colbert’s show, which had caused her to miss various Senate votes the previous night.

Slotkin expressed her deep concerns about the dire situation in Gaza, highlighting the suffering of children and the scarcity of food and medical supplies. “It’s just hard to shake off the images of vulnerable kids,” she noted.

She mentioned that any future votes related to military aid would be evaluated individually, reflecting her hope for a positive shift in humanitarian efforts. While she believes Hamas leadership deserves a strong response for the events of October 7, she also acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself like any other nation.

A proposed resolution led by Senator Bernie Sanders aimed to halt over $675 million in arms sales to Israel and prevent thousands of rifles from being supplied. Although it was largely defeated, a notable number of Democrats—more than half—supported the initiative.

Concerns about the voting patterns within the Democratic Caucus are increasingly alarming. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has been drawing attention, particularly with reports highlighting growing food shortages and hunger in the region.

This week, former President Trump also voiced his worries, admitting there is “real hunger” in Gaza.

Slotkin, who previously worked as a CIA analyst in Iraq, emphasized that her experiences in the Middle East taught her about the effective distribution of aid even in challenging circumstances. “During the toughest years of the war, we still managed to get humanitarian supplies to places like Fallujah,” she reflected.

Furthermore, she critiqued Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance, suggesting that his actions have not only weakened Israel’s standing with American lawmakers but also endangered longstanding bipartisan support for the country.

However, Slotkin’s position has drawn criticism, even from within Michigan. Representative Rashida Tlaib, the lone Palestinian-American in Congress, criticized colleagues who voted to continue military support for Israel, expressing disappointment in those who chose not to participate in the voting process.

Michigan, which has a significant Arab American population, was a focal point for resistance against Israeli policies during the recent election cycles.
