Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) is set to bring a democratic response to President Trump's upcoming Congress speech, according to a press release on Thursday.
Slotkin's role was revealed Thursday by Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) and House minority leader Hakem Jeffries (DN.Y.), according to a press release. The newly elected Michigan Senator comes in particular from the states the president overturned in 2024.
“Elissa Slotkin has dedicated her life to protecting our country, serving the Americans and fighting for Michigan,” Schumer said in a press release.
“While nothing but a rising star in our party, Elissa has proven she can get things done, whether it's standing up for low-cost, affordable healthcare, our economic and national security, or defending every family in Michigan,” he added.
In the post On a social platform X On Thursday, Slotkin said he “looks forward to talking directly with Americans next week.”
“The public hopes that our leaders will level up with them on what's actually happening in our country,” she added.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) invited the president to speak on March 4, saying in a letter to Trump in January he said he “said the administration and the 119th Congress are working together.”
“To do this, it is my clear honor and great privilege to invite US lawmakers to attend a joint meeting of Congress on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and share America's first vision for the legislative future. I am eagerly awaiting your response.”
Reuters has it I reported that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said a speech from Trump will move forward next month.
